The Story of Kettle Creek Marina
By: Fiona Nisbet
Kettle Creek Marina began 32 summers ago when 2 young sailors from London thought messing about with boats would be fun ! Previously the marina had been owned by 12 St.Thomas businessmen-boaters with wooden boats and boat barns built in in the mid 1960’s. Twenty years, later life had changed for the original members and an opportunity arose in 1986 when John & Fiona saw the potential to expand and increase the number of slips. Major dredging, installation of new steel walls, upgraded docks and electrical systems have allowed them to attract boaters both locally and from across the lake. Attractive landscaped grounds provide space for small groups of boaters to hold breakfasts and cook-outs.
Over the past 20 years Port Stanley has become a destination point for american boaters because Kettle Creek Marina has catered to the transient guest dockage market. This has resulted in a tremendous summer boost for the village ( the equivalent of 10 hotel rooms) as american boaters actively explore ,shop, and dine during their time in Port Stanley.
Whether the boaters are from Cleveland, Sandusky or Sparta, John and Fiona say, ” its just like having friends to stay in our backyard”.
